Vanguard Properties donates chapel designed by Francis Kéré to the community of Muda

Vanguard Properties has announced the donation of a chapel to the community of Muda, in Grândola. Designed by renowned architect and winner of the 2022 Pritzker Prize, Francis Kéré, this project is part of a comprehensive initiative to revitalise and expand Aldeia da Muda, which also includes improvements to infrastructure, as well as the creation of green spaces, public art, and new residential and commercial areas.

A German citizen born in Burkina Faso, Francis Kéré is recognised the world over for his innovative use of sustainable materials, as well as his commitment to using architecture for the purposes of community development. Built primarily from wood, the chapel will cover an area of 330 m² and is designed to capture natural light, thus creating a serene and welcoming environment for the congregation.

The indoor space will be divided into three main areas: a part for prayer, with capacity for 60 people; an area of passage that has a visual link to the outside; and support zones with private and technical facilities. Choosing wood as the main construction material not only enhances the chapel's natural aesthetic but mirrors Kéré and Vanguard Properties' own vision of sustainability.

This new place of worship will be available to both Muda residents and non-residents, who will be attracted by a range of events, such as weddings and baptisms, thus contributing to the region’s economic and social dynamic.

That said, Vanguard Properties' contribution goes beyond the chapel, with the company having recently signed an agreement to install artworks by Alexandre Farto, better known as Vhils, as well as significantly improving existing infrastructure, such as water systems, sewage, electricity and access roads. The inclusion of a new shopping area aims to offer easy access to essential products and services, which will have a positive effect on local residents’ quality of life.

This project boosts Muda's profile as a centre for architectural innovation and sustainability, as well as underlining Vanguard Properties' commitment to enriching communities’ lives through projects with significant social and cultural impact.
