The Carbon Footprint of Current and Future Buildings
Manuel Collares Pereira, scientific advisor at Vanguard Properties, recently shared his thoughts regarding the construction industry’s carbon footprint. As such, with growing concern about climate change, it’s worth remembering that European regulations are focussed on limiting the increase in the average global temperature to no more than 1.5ºC by the end of the century.
In this e-book, entitled A Pegada de Carbono dos Edifícios do Presente e do Futuro (The Carbon Footprint of Current and Future Buildings), Pereira highlights the complexity of the climate challenge, emphasising that the elimination of fossil fuel consumption wouldn’t solve the problem, due to the fact that carbon dioxide (CO2) remains in the atmosphere for a long time. Vanguard Properties' scientific advisor’s solution involves active carbon sequestration, focussing on photosynthesis and the production of long-lasting natural materials, such as wood, which can store large amounts of CO2 per cubic metre. This approach, which is particularly relevant to the building industry, not only reduces carbon footprint, but also boosts economic activity.
Pereira’s text provides crucial insight into how the construction sector can play a key role in the fight against climate change by offering practical solutions for reducing CO2 emissions.
