Comporta Sustainable Living

Comporta Quadrado

Sustainability is the pillar that aggregates the entire project.

Promoting ecological value by building the foundations of an integrated and integrating community are the guiding principles to be followed.

Sea - Earth - Community - The following strategy is based on three axes: the protection of the oceans, the ecology of the built space, the creation of opportunities for people and a unique experience.

SEA
Water is one of the most important resources on the planet. Comporta Sustainable Living will have a team dedicated to the intelligent management of this resource and the promotion of the sea economy. Some of the objectives in initiatives related to this axis include minimizing drinking water consumption, preserving coastal areas and promoting the sea economy.

Given the context of the location of the enterprise and the climate change we face, there are significant water cycle challenges. Thus an ecologically sustainable project should be neutral or even positive in the amount of water generated and used and should ensure water quality at both inlet and outlet.

M1 - Minimize and monitor drinking water consumption
Considering the scarcity of the groundwater and potential contamination of it by waste, the undertaking should be fully autonomous from current water resources and ensure the quality of water in the effluents produced. To this end, some of the concrete measures to be implemented include the construction of two state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for the reuse of treated effluents for irrigation and other secondary uses. On the other hand, and also for the efficient management of this resource, the feasibility of installing an osmosis desalination system that can also contribute to meeting local water needs will be studied.

M2 - Local awareness and preservation of coastal zone and marine environment
In light of the delicate local ecosystem, initiatives will be developed to raise awareness of best practices in beach management and conservation and the entire delicate dune system. These actions will be developed with strong focus on the local population.

Concern for the environment and its enhancement will cut across the entire project, from minimizing its footprint, to sustainable economic exploitation, to preserving the marine and terrestrial environment, promoting an appreciation of the region's natural capital and contributing to its development. conservation and sustainable use. The main existing natural assets are the Sado Estuary (dolphins, salt marshes and migratory birds), the seafront (dunes and coastal environments) and the green areas and associated natural environments.

Sado Estuary - Dolphins, salt marshes and migratory birds

Specifically, actions will be defined that contribute to the preservation / restoration of marshland areas in the Sado Estuary, which is associated with a rich fauna of migratory birds that are the focus of attraction for many nature lovers around the world. Finally, the resident population of bottlenose dolphins in the Sado Estuary frequent the waters on the estate's seafront, so contributing to their conservation (the current population has been declining significantly) helps to ensure the system's balance.

Sea front, dunes and coastal environments

At the sea / land interface, the dunes deserve special attention, not only in terms of building adequate accessibility to their preservation, but also in eradicating exotic plants and strengthening native vegetation. On the beaches, in addition to traditional bathing uses, the region offers interesting diving spots, including the seafront of the estate and its surroundings. Nature watching, including several shorebirds and migratory birds that inhabit coastal and marshland environments, are also activities to be valued.

M3 - Promotion of the sea economy
The Sea as a national strategic pillar could not fail to be focused on the project. Several initiatives will be developed that can promote the sea economy, R&D activities and support for ocean startups. This objective will thus be linked to the Community axis as these initiatives are intended to be related to the local population and its activities.

With regard to Aquaculture and Fishing, focus will be on the production of fish species and oysters in extensive and biological regime in the region, taking advantage of the vast available area and biological conditions of Sado. Other products such as algae for use in wellness treatments, thalassotherapy to algotherapy and contribution to CO2 uptake could also be explored.

In short, initiatives to consider could include promoting sustainable fishing, multi-trophic aquaculture, thalassotherapy, but also promoting a brand with sustainably and organically produced seafood in the region.

EARTH
In the Terra axis, the objectives of territorial management and planning are gathered, so that any intervention on the ground is developed in accordance with practical construction improvements and with full respect for integration with the site. The homestead is intended to promote the functioning of a truly sustainable community.

T1 - Sustainable Buildings
In this chapter, one of the priority objectives is to promote the sustainability of the built environment, integrating the best practices of bioclimatic architecture and following the principles of international sustainable construction systems. The Sustainable Building Tool (SBTool), an international tool developed by the International Initiative for the Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE), will be the tool followed to achieve this goal.

T2 Sustainable Communities
Aspects such as mobility, social welfare, promotion of recycling and consumption of local materials and products are some of the aspects that will develop and enable the functioning of a truly sustainable community. To this end, the guidelines of Bioregional, an organization with extensive experience in the development of eco-communities, and Biorgional's One Planet Living initiative will be followed.

T3 - Agriculture and Biodiversity
Sustainable buildings and communities can only exist in an integrative logic of local production and consumption, as well as full respect and promotion of local biodiversity. Local organic farming, landscape protection and long-term plans for biodiversity management will be a focus of the TERRA axis.

T4- Architecture and Design
Following the logic of sustainable construction, architecture will follow the local legacy, where construction and design integrate into the natural landscape. All of this will be done using the best world practices of the quality hotel and residential industry. In a word, the building will be part of the local fabric and culture in tune with the rest of the world.

COMMUNITY
The sea axis and the land axis meet the project's sustainability objectives with respect to the management of the site's valuable natural resources and the development of best practices for using this existing space. In the Community axis we want to reinforce the social and economic aspect, valuing the local population and traditions, so that the Comporta Sustainable Living project brings added value to the local experience.

C1 - Employment and Opportunity
The project will be an important source of local employment, aiming to promote the employability of the local community and the development of training for the qualification of local human resources. Among other areas, this training will focus on sustainable space management issues and good environmental practices across the region.

C2- Social Cohesion
It is intended that the infrastructure to be developed in the enterprise may also be used by the local population. It is also intended to develop activities that involve the community and encourage social cohesion, namely through activities related to environmental protection and local biodiversity.

C3 - Local and circular economy
A sustainable local purchasing policy will be developed that promotes, wherever possible, the use of local products and services, particularly consumer goods. Aspects such as local and organic agriculture, local crafts and promotion of small producers in the region will be integrated into this sustainable consumption policy.

CULTURE FOUNDATION
Creation of a foundation in the area of culture, with its own space, and with activity on the local context - but linked to the international context. It is intended from the beginning, innovate and acquire a very high position. This project will develop a network of international partnerships of high status and quality.

CF 1 - Sea and Field Design and Architecture
Organize the exhibition of a permanent exhibition based on the artifacts of the area, specific to the area of agriculture and activity at sea, but with avant-garde museum treatment. Also develop temporary exhibitions curated by leading international names in design and architecture that contribute positively to social, environmental or economic issues in the area.

CF2 - Plastic Arts
Promote the fine arts, for example by promoting artists' residencies, or very promising or established young people, working on local themes.

CF 3 - Summer Pavilion
Launch an annual program for the design of a temporary pavilion near the sea and the dunes, which will be a resting and reflection point dedicated to nature and man.

Invite big names in world architecture and design to design it annually in sustainable and local materials, and commission an artist of the same caliber to produce an ephemeral work of art to put in or near the pavilion. Make this a renowned event that will mark the international agenda.

CF 4 - Public Space Design
Develop a project in the area of public or semi-private space with innovative features in terms of environmental, ecological, functional and aesthetic quality. Design for the 21st century, integrating high tech communication technologies with sustainable urban equipment design, eco-friendly and noise reduction floors, electrical mobility, non-invasive signage, controlled color palette, etc.
