Tikva - Jewish Museum of Lisbon to be built in 2022

With an additional donation of €2 million, the founder of Vanguard Properties, Claude Berda and his family are the first donors to TIKVA, the Jewish Museum of Lisbon.  This contribution channelled through the Hagadá Association, responsible for the creation, setting up, and management of the museum, could substantially increase and once again shows the fondness and respect that the family has for Portugal and the Portuguese.

The protocol of collaboration between Lisbon City Council and the Hagadá Association, which marks the start of the project, was signed on 31 March, a symbolic date which marks two centuries since the Court of Inquisition was abolished in Portugal by order of the Cortes.

With the name TIKVA, which means hope in Hebrew, the museum will be built in Pedrouços on Avenida da Índia, on an area close to the Torre de Belém and the Champalimaud Foundation. To be built on a plot of land of around 6,237m2 and a gross construction area (GCA), this cultural amenity will be designed by the architect Daniel Libeskind, one of today’s most prominent architects who designed the Jewish museums of Berlin, San Francisco and Copenhagen, as well as memorials to the Holocaust in the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, and the World Trade Centre master plan in New York, in collaboration with the architect Miguel Saraiva, founder of the studio Saraiva + Associates.

The museum, which is forecast to start at the beginning of 2022 with completion estimated for 2024, will be spread over four floors (below ground, ground floor, 1st floor and 2nd floor). It will have a permanent exhibition in two sections - Jewish religious culture and a chronologically organised historical time-line. It will also stage temporary exhibitions.

The protocol signing ceremony at City Hall took place in the presence of the Mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, representatives of the Hagadá Association, the architect Daniel Libeskind and his wife, and the architect Miguel Saraiva, among others. During the project presentation speech, the President of Hagadá, Esther Mucznik, had the opportunity of emphasising that whilst it tells the very ancient story of the presence of the Jews on the most westerly part of Europe and its contribution to the Portuguese nation and the city of Lisbon, this was not a museum about Jews, but a Portuguese museum that tells the story of a common path that is an integral part of the history of Portugal.

TIVKA, of which Vanguard Properties is proud to be linked, albeit indirectly, will undoubtedly be another milestone for the city and provide a further pretext to visit the Portuguese capital.
